Over the next few days, grandchildren will be pleased to realize how much their grandmother knows.
Every summer, thousands of grandparents from all over the United States and around the world enter and bring their grandchildren (ages 7 or 8 to age 13 or 14) for one of several campuses for grandparents University (GPU). Classes are taught by professors, faculty members, teaching assistants or professionals in certain fields.
Each family unit stays in a dormitory or suite room and must attend a shared class. This is a one-, two-or three-day consecutive holiday packed with fun, learning and bonding between generations.
I talk based on experience, just returned from West Chester University's program GPU. (My cucuku were in their 20s and 30s, so they were too old to attend.) I went to class about TV production and DNA, capturing some movies and parts of Disney trivia contests and eating in the dining room. I have a ball.
You don't even need to be your grandparents to go to the University of Grandparents. Almost all of the GPU programs allow friends (aunts, uncles, niece, nephew or other close relatives or friends) to join in, instead of grandfathers or grandchildren. Some, like Kansas State, let parents attend. Usually one-two-up to one ratio (either grandparents to grandchildren or vice versa).
Beginning in 2001 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the university's grandparents have been so successful since licensing to universities including Purdue, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, West Chester, Washington West, Winona and other branches of the university Wisconsin.
Three objectives: forge a connection between generations, helping children learn about potential careers and increasing the likelihood that children will want to attend university when they hit college age.
Ana Lucia Mendonca, GPU coordinator in Kansas State, thought "The best part is being on campus and experiencing life in dormitories." And in his program, he added, "Increasingly know the members of the Community KSU (Kansas State), professors and all Something they do. "
Many participants enjoy the program so much they come back again. In fact, about 80% of participants attendees return next year. At Purdue, one grandfather who was present in 2018 was delighted that he was present this year with seven grandchildren and other adults.
There are some key differences in the program, besides the length of residence time.
Wisconsin, Purdue, Winona State and Oklahoma State have majors where participants focus on a particular field of research. Maybe it's something from veterinary medicine... .. For astronomy to the computer of science archery.
Other schools have a class menu which may feature flight theory, producing TV, fashion design, how DNA studies work, robotics or even make recordings of grandparents reading to grandchildren.
Jessica Kaufussman, director of the Winona Retiree Center, said it's GPUS Legos course is "very popular – with children helping grandparents more than the contrary. Then, grandparents saw that technology and found a practical solution to the problem. "
Ray Drago, a team of technologists who started Drive Technology...,... Come to each GPU in West Chester, starting with his eldest grandson, Steven. She was impressed, but realised the program didn't offer any engineering classes. So he offered his services and became a "visiting Professor" since the year 2013. "Steven loves GPU... "... Until he came with me for the first session... Her sister attended the show of my art in my robotics course. Each grandparent team built a robot from the kit that I gave and then we turned it out! "
When the GPU participants are not in the classroom, they may have their photos with the school mascot, attend the ice Cream social event, compete in trivia trivia competitions, climb ropes, build teams, tour grandparents or create special secret projects for Children to give to campus.
Some schools (Wisconsin-Madison, Purdue, Oklahoma State) need their grandparents or children to have attended school and may be a member of the Alumni Association. On the other, no former association with the university is required.
By definition, institutions are on a campus and, while they are considered accessible, classes and dining rooms are walking around each other. Most schools provide a shuttle service if you let them know you will want it when you sign up. If you use a drug that needs cooling, that should also be arranged before time.
The GPU cost for rooms, boards and classes varies with school and session lengths, but is generally run from $100 to $300 or more for the first adult and $100 to $150 for the first child. Some schools (Wisconsin, Michigan and Oklahoma) offer a limited number of scholarships.
Generally, applications are due in January or February, with a selection of classes at the time, or a month or more later. The University of Wisconsin-Madison and Michigan sold it in a few minutes.
For those who have never been on campus for a long time, it may be a pleasant surprise that many dormitories now have rooms and private bathrooms (showers, toilets) or two rooms may share bathrooms. Also, dormitories tend to air-condition, often with individual space control. If the warmer temperatures (LT is summer) bother you, you may want to take a fan.
Occasionally, pillows and linens are provided (perhaps for an additional fee), or you can bring your own. Mattress? Well, they are not quite the date when grandparents go to college, but they may not be what you sleep at home.
If you don't want to spend the night at the hostel, you can stay in your hotel or home if you live nearby and want to go back and forth. There may be discounts if you don't sleep in the dorm.
